What Are We Looking At: Vacation
The painting I wanted to go look at was being cleaned or something.
Religious Art
Last week I was all set to go see the Carvaggio I mentioned in my last post. We had visitors in town who wanted to see the Nelson so it was all going to work out.
But when I arrived to take in the grandeur, the painting was not on display. I guess these old paintings require some sort of maintenance. Anyway me and my 9 year old took great delight in realizing that the wall it is usually hung on is actually fabric.
And now I am getting ready to go on vacation and so won’t be posting again this week. Alas, it will give me more time to ponder religious art. When this painting was made, it was staggering how much was unknown. They were still mapping the world, looking in caves for dragons. When Columbus landed on what is now Jamaica, he thought he was on Japan. He thought present day Cuba was China.
Everyone else thought he was an idiot.
It is easy to think we are a lot smarter today than we were 400 years ago. What dragons are we looking for today?
Today is a good day to look for rainbows and pots of gold.
